Beschrijving Formerly the residence of a celebrated 19th-century Dutch artist, now lavishly decorated in a style he would have been quite at home in – with welcome 21st-century touches, and generous, genuinely engaged hosts. The champagne breakfast is unsurpassed. You’re a tad out of the centre, but a short hop by tram A little out of the centre, in a quiet area of Amsterdam East, overlooking a park but on a fairly busy road. The Tropenmuseum and Artis zoo are within close walking distance; other sights require wheels. The main museums and the city centre/canal belt are about 20 minutes away by tram (a little less by taxi); the café and dining quarter of De Pijp is 10-15 minutes away by tram, but a small quarter about five minutes’ walk away is fast becoming a mini dining-out hub. Each suite is individually and sumptuously decorated, and is more spacious than you’ll find pretty much anywhere else in town (outside of a three-figure, presidential suite price bracket). There are personal touches to the décor, too, such as a mural of irises painted by Camilla, and artwork brought as gifts by returning guests. Both suites have a separate bedroom and drawing room, and enormous bathrooms (with Clarins products). The Isaac Israels suite has its own garden terrace, and there are iPod docking stations, Nespresso machines and refreshment facilities in both suites (and much, much more).

Description Each suite is assigned a butler, and the easy-going, quietly polite, effortlessly helpful attitude of the staff really does give you the feeling that for once the claim that ‘everything is possible’ is not a false one. The staff appear happy and to get on well with each other, which always leads to a convivial atmosphere. There’s an excellent restaurant and cocktail bar, with a plush guests-only VIP lounge attached to the bar, should it prove too busy with hoi polloi. There’s no spa, but each suite has its own steam room and whirlpool bath, and fitness equipment can be provided. Suites vary in size (from large to enormous), and each is individually decorated in a similarly opulent style to the public areas, though with variations in mood and colour (cool blues and grey perhaps, or richer bronze and crimson). Some have views of the Royal Palace, and one boasts a large (heated) terrace overlooking shoppers on the Rokin. Quadruple glazing in the suites means that busy life on the Dam below passes in absolute silence – the overall mood is one of domestic sanctuary. The mini bar is stocked with a good range of wines and spirits, there’s a top-range espresso machine, and a tablet controls mood-lighting and other room features – though there is no dock or other music facility. The artwork (curated by a local gallery) changes periodically, and may not suit all tastes (my suite sported a large picture of a tiger and a composite photo of Jackie Kennedy, a Cadillac and a bottle of Chanel perfume).White marble bathrooms have a large whirlpool bath, twin showers that double as a steam room, and come with Lanvin and Lalique products.
